The main focus of the course in the Political Economy of Globalization is the study of the impact of globalization on the functioning of modern economies. This is first presented in an extensive introduction of its basic framework and the ideas that characterize it as well as its three main approaches: Mercantilism, Liberalism, Structuralism.
In particular, special reference is made to the development over time of the phenomenon of the globalisation of economies.
The course focuses on three main features of globalisation:
α) the expansion and almost uncontrolled operation of money and capital markets.
b) The occurrence of severe financial crises both at the national and global level.
c) The limitations imposed on the exercise of effective & independent national economic policy.
The understanding of the above mentioned phenomena and structures of the global system in the current phase of globalization provides students with valuable knowledge and information on current issues of International Political Economy. In this context, the course in Political Economy of Globalization contributes to the formation of contemporary reflection on topical issues of our time.
